Carbon Footprint – downsizing a home lab?

I’ve had a home lab for learning and skill development from past many years, however, COVID situation and lock downs had many of us move away from our traditional work locations, back to our native parental towns. Most of us opting for remote work.

Lock down and Exodus

This experience in itself compelled me to downsize every bit of possession we owned as a nuclear family. We decided that we must be frugal and stay nimble – which meant to either give-away, donate or sell any excessive under-utilized burden. To be a role model, I’ve decided to start first.

Present

This is my current home lab rack. Nothing too crazy – a 27U cabinet. It’s a conversation piece sure, but, a space-hog and an eye-sore if you live in an apartment.

Future

Per my plan to downsize to a more reasonable stack, I’m planning to pursue the following sketch. Thanks to advise and ideas from /r/homelab community.

Summary

Hope the world returns back to it’s usual way soon and I’m able to find a purpose to reduce my 27U down to a 16U or lower.

Stay Nimble!
